Proceedings of the Workshop on Certification of Non-Wood Forest Produce Including 
Medicinal, Aromatic and Dye Plants: The Raipur Report

 

INTRODUCTION 

April 9, 2003 marked an important day in the history of management of non-wood forest produce in the state of Chhattisgarh. Chhattisgarh State Forest Department and the Chhattisgarh State Minor Forest Produce (Trading and Development) Cooperative Federation Limited, Raipur organized a one-day "National Workshop on Certification of Non-wood Forest Produce including Medicinal, Aromatic and Dye Plants" at Hotel Babylon International, Raipur. The workshop was inaugurated by the Hon'ble Chief Minister of State, Mr. Ajit Pramod Kumar Jogi and attended by the Chief Secretary of Chhattisgarh; Chairman, Chhattisgarh State Minor Forest Produce Federation (MPMFPFED); Raipur, officers of the State Forest department; MPMFPFED; Forest development Corporation; the Director General of Police, Raipur; Principal Secretary (Forests); representatives from the Food and Agriculture organization (FAO) of the United Nations; IDRC, Canada; Ministry of Environment and Forests; Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE); National Medicinal Plants Board; Tropical Forest Research Institute (TFRI); State Forest Research Institute (SFRI), Jabalpur; representatives from pharmaceutical companies such as the Natural Remedies; Dabur; Baidyanath; Zandu; State representatives from Forest Departments of adjoining states; Foundation for Revitalization of Local Health Traditions; certification agency INDOCERT; members of the primary forest produce societies, representing the village level non-wood forest produce gatherer groups, and various other expert organizations and individuals from the forestry sector.
